Microplastics in the Mississippi
Presented by Mark Benfield, LSU Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences professor
A disposable plastic water bottle can travel the length of the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Louisiana leaching toxic chemicals into the water and estuaries. LSU Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences Professor Mark Benfield and colleagues collect large amounts of plastic smaller than the size of a Mardi Gras bead called microplastics in nets aboard a small boat. They are studying the abundance and composition of microplastics in the river. Come learn more about this research being conducted at LSU.

LSU Science Café is sponsored by the Office of Research & Economic Development.
